I also think, why is it that I'll spend money on the boys (not excessively but my god they just keep wearing out the knees of ALL their trousers) but when it comes to me, I'll put stuff in a basket, look at the cost ,and then slowly close my laptop and back away!

Exactly! Although I do quite a few secondhand sales for my kids while I can get away with it before they want the "cool" clothes.
